Lucky for you, this trip was quite eventful. So eventful in fact that I must list it out in bullet points. So yeah, get ready to be glad you weren't me this weekend!
- We drove three hours to get to the trailer we were staying in. A family friend owns the trailer as well as a pontoon boat and fishing boat on the dock. We finally make it, only to realize said family friend accidentally gave us the wrong key. Minor catch, but ultimately not a big deal. We grab the hide-a-key and get in.
- The second we walk in we know something isn't right. It smelled AWFUL! Almost like someone hadn't flushed the toilet and it had sat there for weeks. Yeah, that bad. Luckily, there wasn't anything in the toilet... not so luckily, we got to play a rousing game of "find-the-stink" yay us....
- While unpacking the groceries, my step-mom (SM) won said game of "find-the-stink." The fridge had died at some point meaning all the fish and chicken that was once frozen in the freezer was now rotted and disgusting. SM gets busy with the bleach while step-sister 1(SS1) pulls out the febreeze. At this point, all we can smell is rotten food and ocean breeze scented febreeze. Fantastic.
- The next day we went out on the pontoon boat. We decided to take Oscar with us. All the girls (besides me) decided it would be a good idea to put Oscar in the water. You know those dogs on shows like America's Funniest Home Videos who start kicking at the mere sight of a puddle? Well, as soon as his back paws touched the water he started kicking. He did not stop until Dad finally pulled him back on the boat. Once there he immediately went to the back of the boat and curled up on MY clothes. Go figure. At least I got a good laugh out of that one! (FYI, we didn't take him back out after that. He got really hot and we didn't want to
torture himmake him sick.) - There were eight of us in a two bedroom/one bathroom trailer. Needless to say, the sleeping situation was not ideal. I spent the first night roasting on the couch, the second on a deflated air mattress (and not the regular height mattress. This one was double height, so it deflating meant I ended up in a 'V' form with by butt on the ground and my head and knees getting aquainted. Lovely), and the third night under the recliners one an egg-crate mattress. The last night some people had left so I was able to grab the other bed. No sleep+no caffeine= one very cranky Kirsty!
- The next couple of days were uneventful... at least until Sunday. Here's where it gets really good. We go out to the boat and Dad notices that the battery isn't charging like it should. He pulled out on of those battery charger thingies and plugged it in. After it charged a little bit, he assumed is was working and suggested we drive the boat around a little just to see how it does. We pull out of our dock space and start heading out. We get a good distance away from our space but not quite out of the no-wake-zone when the boat starts sputtering. Dad tried to turn the boat around but it died. All attempts to resurrect it failed. We were officially stranded in the no-wake-zone. SM decides to try to paddle us back to our space. There was only ONE paddle on the boat. Seriously, what good is one paddle going to do?! She started on one side and paddled, then moved to the other, back and forth humming the Gilligan's Island Theme Song. We were all laughing at her, at least until we noticed we were floating straight towards some huge houseboats. When I say huge, I mean these suckers had ceiling fans and air units on them. It was then that SS3 and friend decided we needed more paddle power. SS3 grabbed the paddle while her friend grabbed the broom. Yes, they were paddling the pontoon boat with a broom. No, it didn't work. We got really close to the boats and had to push ourselves using the slides on the houseboats to hold our boat against a piece of dock (and to keep us from hitting the other boats). Dad ran off to get help while the rest of us held position. He finally came back with a bigger pontoon boat and an employee who was able to tow us back to our dock space. That was where we remained for the rest of our lake time that day. We ate lunch and took naps (BTW it was the best 30 minutes of sleep I had the entire trip!) I SOOO wish I had video/pictures of the paddling though. Way too funny!!
